Some Research....

I have been doing some research for my project on the following artists.

Edwin Zwakman:
Zwakman works with the reality in photos by constructing landscapes
from personal memory.  He then photogra
phs the objects as if it is a real scene.

Thomas Demand:
Demand creates miniature
dioramas out of paper to mimic real life places such as the oval office, and the grottos.  Demand then photographs these photos in a way that makes it seem like the photographer was actually in that very room and that it is not just a diorama made out of paper, but an actual space.

Naoki Honjo:
Honjo does sort of the opposite with his work than my project.  His photos are of real life scenes but taken at such a distance that the seem like little plastic architectures and figurines.

Courtney Beckett:
Beckett is a photographer that takes very commercial advertisement like picture
s of food.

Slinkachu:
Slinkachu is a street photographer who hand makes little figurines and puts them into the real world so they are basically interacting with reality.  This is wonderful for the commentary on real versus fake in photography.

Thesis Review

Today I had my second thesis review of the quarter.  I have to be honest I was really really nervous about this one especially because of how the previous thesis meeting went.  I even brought my good luck duck with me!!!  I was happily surprised because this one thankfully went A LOT better than my last thesis review.  My new project seemed to get a much better reaction than my previous project dealing with bands.  I hung up both the cookie photo and the cheeseburger photo and was told that they are both good but they are going in two separate directions.  The cheeseburger one shows how the consumerism approach to show "fake" food as an edible item.  While the cookies show sort of a false gesture of love by someone taking the time to bake you cookies but the cookies aren't really real.  I was pretty much told that I can really go either route for the photos, the commercial advertisement route or the comforting false gesture route.  At this point I am sort of leaning more towards the advertisement commercial route because the part that really got me interested was the fact that we really do live in a society that sort of praises "fake" food.  Even more so, it is so interesting to me that the food that we see on menus, has been so manipulated to look good that what they are advertising really is "fake" food.  Anyway I am really quite excited at how well it went because like I said, I was completely nervous.  My good luck duck paid off!!!!

PRESENTATION OF ART- ANALYSIS WORKSHEET

Chewing Color

1.              General Description of the Show

A.   The artists' name(s):

Marilyn Minter

B.    How many pieces are in the show:

There are 10 pieces in the show.

C.    Describe the location/context of the exhibition space:

This show is on the second floor of the Contemporary Arts Center.  There is one large room and one smaller room connected by a short hallway with work hung fairly spaced apart on white walls.

D.   Describe your perceptions on the content or idea behind the work:

My perception of this is that it is all about female beauty and glamour.  The colors are bright and shiny and there seems to be glitter included.  This seems to be from the other end of glamour and beauty, for example, when it goes wrong and how this beautiful person can suddenly seem gross.  This is the complete opposite end of the beautiful spectrum.

2.        Give Detailed Descriptions of the Following:

A.            The method of presentation of artwork (media of artwork, size of artwork, and

how it is presented- frames, mats, pushpins, pedestals, etc.)

This exhibit includes one video projected very large scale on a plain wall, two large-scale paintings, one smaller painting, and six large-scale photographs.  The video is projected on what I assume is cinema size, the larger paintings are 96 x 60 inches, the smaller painting is 24 x 24 inches, and the photos included the sizes 40 x 30 inches and 86 x 60 inches.  There are no frames or mattes on any of the pieces.  Only clips hold up the work.  The photos are all c-prints and the paintings are all enamel on metal.

B.             The nature of the exhibition space (size, shape, ceiling height, formal, informal,

etc.)

The space includes one large, dimly lit, room where the video is being shown.  There are high ceilings (about thirty feet), white walls, and a reflective concrete floor with two concrete pillars and a set of stairs going up.  There is a long bench, that is actually quite comfortable to sit and watch the film and there is soft music playing.  It is wide open in the room.  The artwork is presented in a rather informal way but in a formal setting.

C.             The type and nature of the lighting in the exhibition space

The larger room is dimly lit with some natural light.  The smaller room, as well as the short hallway, is much better lit.  They have rather warm toned yellowish-orange overhead spotlights.

D.            The relationship of the art pieces to each other (physical and thematic)

Physically the photos differ from the paintings and both from the video.  However, they are all consistent in color choice.  They all involve some trace of the female body.  Thematically, they all relate to each other perfectly.  They all highlight the imperfect perception of female beauty.

E.             Other external factors (noise level, air currents, number of people in the space,

etc.)

The sound factors in the room include the soundtrack for the video that is playing as well as external factors such as the echoing of footsteps and voices throughout the building.   There are only two other people in the exhibit.  They are both men and seem to only be interested in the photography not the video or paintings.

3.              How the Presentation Method Affects the Art (use the back, if necessary)

If you feel that the method used to present the work supports and enhances its

meaning to the viewer, clarify the criteria upon which you are basing this opinion.

If you feel that the method used to present the work detracts from and weakens its

meaning to the viewer, clarify the criteria upon which you are basing this opinion.

This is an informal subject presented in a formal setting.  I feel that this method sort of works against each other in that the art all highlights this imperfect dirty being - yet it is presented in a clean art gallery setting.  The video was probably a more influential experience when it was shown in Times Square.

PRESENTATION OF ART- ANALYSIS WORKSHEET

Starburst: Color Photography in America (1970-1980)

1.              General Description of the Show

A.   The artists' name(s):

Many different photographers including:

*Joel Meyerowitz

*Nan Golden

*William Eggleston

*Mitch Epstein

*Helen Levitt

B.    How many pieces are in the show:

Many different collections ranging from just a couple prints to twenty or so prints to literally hundreds grouped together for one collection

C.    Describe the location/context of the exhibition space:

This show is at the Cincinnati Art Museum.  It is set up like a maze to direct you through each collection.  Each artist has their own section in the maze with a quote from them about their color photography and a brief description of their work.  It is lit by warm overhead lighting only.  The walls are consistently white with wood flooring.  There are benches throughout the gallery to sit upon and reflect.  It’s rather warm in the gallery with sounds of footsteps, quiet voices, and jingling keys.

D.   Describe your perceptions on the content or idea behind the work:

I think this show is purely about the introduction of color in the world of photography from 1970 to 1980.  Each artist’s collection has their own idea behind their use of color.  Collectively they work just as a focus on color photography from 1970-1980

2.        Give Detailed Descriptions of the Following:

A.            The method of presentation of artwork (media of artwork, size of artwork, and

how it is presented- frames, mats, pushpins, pedestals, etc.)

The method of presentation is quite different depending on the photographer.  They range all the way from 2 x 2 inches to about 3 x 4 feet.  Most of the works are window matted with thick, white matte board with either a white or black frame with glass overtop.  The photographs range from different types of printing methods including: chromogenic prints, dye transfer prints, offset lithography on a magazine page, projections, cibachrome prints, Polaroid’s, inkjet prints, pigment prints, and ectacolor prints.

B.             The nature of the exhibition space (size, shape, ceiling height, formal, informal,

etc.)

The exhibition is formal with high ceiling and a very open space. It is lit by warm overhead lighting only.  The walls are consistently white with wood flooring.  There are benches throughout the gallery to sit upon and reflect.

C.             The type and nature of the lighting in the exhibition space

The lighting is a warm toned yellowish-orange overhead lighting

D.            The relationship of the art pieces to each other (physical and thematic)

Thematically related through color.  Physically each collection is separated into its own space, however they are all the traditional rectangular and square format framed and matted with a few exceptions that are the projections.

E.             Other external factors (noise level, air currents, number of people in the space,

etc.)

This is a warm gallery space.  There are noises of footsteps, voices, and jingling keys.  Because of the gallery set up, other people seem sparse, but you can hear them all.

The method of presentation enhances and strengthens the work.  The unity of presentation and framing works to prevent any detraction from the overall theme of color, while the slight separation of each individual collection allows the viewer to ponder about the specific intentions of the artists.

Work in Progress #2

Today was the second work in progress review.  For the first time in I would probably say my career at DAAP, I left the work in progress review with an overall good feeling as to how the review went!  I was picked to go first which I always like because my nerves are always all over the place, so this calms them down getting it over with.  I explained my two pictures and the first comment was from Lillia.  She said 'I love this so much!!! They actually make me hungry.  It's awesome!'.  Bless her!!!!!  That is exactly what I needed to hear.  I just felt like the overall response was so good!  Janie said that she really liked that I was considering the lighting as part of the composition.  The lighting from the cookies to the cheeseburger is s0 different but yet so natural to the subject.  The cheeseburger has high florescent lights like a fast food restaurant should while the cookies have a warmer feel to them, like in a home kitchen.  Brian suggested what if they all had studio lighting like a food advertisement because then it is playing on the "fakeness" on two different levels.  I really like this idea too.  I love the idea of taking highly commercial advertisement pictures of fake food!  Janie suggested that these types of things are great to play with to discover within myself what way speaks to me the most.  I am definitely looking forward to experimenting with this!  Some artists that were suggested to me are: Edwin Zwakman
Thomas Demand
Naoki Honjo
I look forward to researching these artists and more even though I hate research!
-till next time...

Oh, here are the pictures I used for the review!!

in the works....

cookies done!!! now it's fry time!!!
I am kind of thinking of floating frames for my final presentation but Stacey had a great point in that when you have clear surrounding your picture, you surrender yourself to whatever the background color of the wall may be. Hmmmm, I don't know how I feel about that. Maybe a shadowbox? That way I know the background color will always stay constant, but I will still have floating effect for the picture. I am also still thinking about the crochet window matte as Caitlin suggested. Right now though, the most important thing is the photos so I am sort of putting presentation on the back burner for just a little, certainly not until the day before DAAPWorks by any means, but for just a bit right now.
Tomorrow we have our second work in progress review, which actually is my first work in progress review since the thesis change. I can't say that I am not nervous for this one but then, I am always nervous. I really like what I have been doing and am excited to show it at the review tomorrow.
till then...

Visualization Exercise #3: Framing

Today we had our third visualization exercise on framing.  I chose to do a floating frame, no frame, mounted on matte board, and a resin frame with crochet stitches going through it.  I have learned a very important lesson from this: Resin shrinks!  I think I might like to use a floating frame or shadowbox for my final pieces.  We also went around and titled each other's pieces.  Two of my favorites were "100% Angus Yarn" and "Untitled".  I feel that both of these speak to the overall message of the piece.  "100% Angus Yarn" because immediately, my eye reads "100% Angus Beef" and that is sort of the "ah ha" moment of realizing that it actually says yarn just like the same "ah ha" moment when you realize the photo is actually of a crocheted cheeseburger.  I like "Untitled" because I feel that the work is able to speak for itself and so naming each individual piece is hitting the viewer over the head with it.  It definitely gave me a lot to think about.
Till next time...

Wow! Sooo much better!!!

Yesterday, I had my midterm review for my Advanced Photography class. I will be honest, I was extremely scared to face the class even though it is filled with wonderful people and a wonderful instructor. After my last encounter with Ryan, I was very fearful of rejection. I had started to become excited about this new idea and definitely did not want to be pushed down to square one all over again. I worked really really hard on fixing the lighting of the penguin picture and was quite happy with it finally:
I was excited to hang the pi
cture up, but very scared at what the reaction would be. When we started class, we were told to write a question for ourselves and then write a question and post it up next to each picture of everyone in the class. I think this is both an incredibly helpful and incredibly scary exercise. When you are free to
ask what you like in an anonymous fashion you may feel unchained to protect feelings of the artist because they won't know who you are. So my thoughts immediately went to "if anyone absolutely hates this, they now have free reign to express it without me knowing who it is". Most fortunately, the questions I got were mostly "I really like this but, how in the world did you go from bands to penguins". Obviously without previously releasing to the class that my entire thesis had changed pretty much on a dime, this photo would come as a huge shock. I told them how my last thesis review went and told them that I have come to the point where just because you absolutely love something and love to take thousands and thousands of pictures of it does not mean there is enough power behind it for it to become a thesis. I used the example that I
absolutely love my cat, Mowgli Sebastian. He means the world to me and I have probably have well over 20,000 pictures of him in my iPhoto on my Mac. But I have never considered doing a thesis on him, because I know I love him, but why should anyone else be forced to or made to feel that they should also love him. I told them that from the get-go I never was planning on doing a thesis on Mowgli, and so likewise, I can absolutely love my bands and continue to take thousands and thousands of pictures of my bands but not have them be part of my thesis. I shared with them my new idea for my thesis and got their take on it. Janie asked me "What other pictures were you planning on taking? Were they all going to be penguins or other animals?" I told her the current one I am working on is a cheeseburger and then I was going to do a car maybe next. Janie immediately made the connection with a cheeseburger from McDonald's "Isn't that funny? McDonald's is not exactly real food and you are replacing the 'fake' burger with a new fake burger but one that you made". Then the suggestion was made by everyone "why not only crochet food? forget about the animals - just do different types of food making a commentary on this 'fake processed food'." This food is processed and I am processing my own "fake food" through crochet. I feel it necessary to use all caps for this: I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!!! It went from depicting a false reality on everything to a false reality on what we consider food, which I think is so much more powerful. I am very very excited for what is to come out of this project and am actually excited to work on it and talk about it now! This was one of maybe the most helpful critiques I can think of having in my entire DAAP career. I normally leave critiques feeling very angry and sad at how it went, and now, well lets just say everyone close to me is getting sick of me for making them listen to this new idea again and again- and it's only been 24 hours!!! (Sorry Emily haha). And I know that I am not supposed to really think about titles until I have all my work to make it work well, but I have thought of a title already that I LOVE!! "Is There Enough Fiber in Your Diet?". Awesome right? Anyway, till next time!
